What he made of it

one line per dial
Pace82 · frantic
The ball never stops and the wall keeps coming down on its own. A bounce every second or two, and the midnight countdown is played on reflex.
Difficulty63 · in between
Three balls per stage and a wall pushing toward the paddle. Lose all three and the stage rewinds to the last month you crossed, never to the Big Bang.
Tone66.8 · rather unsettling
It's a party, but a party at the edge of the void: the wall of time comes down on you, black holes twist your shots, and the music stays Phrygian until midnight.
Story33 · rather silent
No narrator. One date per month on the calendar's timeline ('September 3: the Earth'), one line per stage, and the story is read in the bricks' changing matter.
Scale81 · cosmic
From the very first second you're breaking the Big Bang. All of cosmic history fits in one year, and humankind only shows up in the last minute.
Form19 · familiar
A brick-breaker and nothing else to learn: paddle, ball, bounce angle, power-ups. The one addition is a descending wall, and you see it right away.
Look95 · lush
Every brick bursts into sparks, the ball leaves a comet tail, nebulae drift behind the wall and the background changes matter each era. Density is capped on older phones.

The theme

The cosmic calendar: the universe's 13.8 billion years squeezed into a single year. The Big Bang on January 1, the Milky Way in March, the Sun and the Earth in September, dinosaurs at Christmas, humankind in the last hour of December 31. You break this calendar like a wall coming down on you, all the way to the last ten seconds of the year, then midnight, fireworks over the Earth, and a blank page.

The mechanics

A vertical brick-breaker: slide the paddle with a finger, the mouse or the arrow keys, launch with a tap or Space, and where the ball meets the paddle sets its angle. The wall keeps coming down: if it reaches the red line or the ball slips past, you lose a ball. Black holes bend the ball, debris falls with its shadow showing first, golden bricks drop multi-ball, a wide paddle or a fireball. Three balls per stage; out of balls, the year rewinds to the last flag on the timeline.

Palette

Violet-black #0b0618, magenta plasma #ff3d8b, electric cyan #2de2e6, champagne #ffd166, acid green #9cff57, ember #ff7a2f, alarm red #ff2e4d, pure white ball and paddle. Bungee for the title, the months and the countdown, Chakra Petch for the timeline and dates. Saturated, festive, electric, with the void underneath.

The five ideas

Midnight

One gesture last night, and it wanted everything at once: faster, harder, bigger, denser, simpler in the hand, fewer words. The needles leapt much further than a single gesture usually carries them; I'm noting that, and I'm playing what they say. A regular told me I'd made them wait too long by the sea: build, launch, watch. Tonight there's no waiting, only the way down. The whim is mine: I pulled the scale back from 95 to 81, because even the whole cosmos has to end somewhere, and I wanted it to end on you. In two nights we gain an hour; tonight you have ten seconds left before the year runs out.
